MASWA GAME RESERVE

Exploring MASWA GAME RESERVE

The Maswa Game Reserve stretches along the western Serengeti National Park, touching the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the southwest. The animal protection area thus fulfills the function of a buffer zone between the surrounding area and the national park. The northern half of the Maswa Game Reserve falls off to Lake Victoria, the rest of Lake Eyasi. Maswa Game Reserve was established in 1962 and it covers an area of 2,200 square kilometers. This game reserve borders the world's famous national park, the Serengeti National Park. Maswa game reserve attracts wild animals from Serengeti national park during dry season.

ATTRACTIONS

The Maswa Game Reserve is known for its wildlife, which is partly due to migration, the major animal migration that takes place in the Serengeti and Masai Mara. At the end of May, gnus appear in the reserve, zebras, topi, Grant's and Thompson's gazelles in July and August. While the wildebeest on their annual hike follows the rain and the regrowing grass, zebras and topis also partly stay behind and do not follow all the hike. In mid-November, the wildebeest will be back in the Maswa Game Reserve. Other mammals stay in the Maswa Game Reserve throughout the year. These include giraffes, impala, hartebeest (also called Kongoni), horse antelope (roan antelope), waterbuck, eland antelope, warthog, buffalo, reedbuck and predators, to which u. a. Hyenas, jackals, leopards, lions and cheetahs belong. However, the number of cheetahs is rather low and leopards or wild dogs can only be seen with much luck. Even elephants are rare, although occasionally flocks from the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Conservation Area through the reserve.
